Game Shooting

Driven game shooting

We promise a warm welcome, good banter and an excellent lunch on shoot days at Ballyvolane House. The birds can be excellent quality too. A driven pheasant and duck shoot was established in 2016 and the shoot has been developing really well over the last couple of seasons. We offer five drives, usually 4 pheasant drives and one duck drive. We also do the odd snipe drive if the birds are in. We shoot 10 guns each day with bags of 100 to 120 birds.

Everyone meets at Ballyvolane House at 9am for coffee in the house. The guns (shooting guests) would then tog out in their hairy tweeds, draw pegs and be ready to move off to the first drive at 9.45am. After the second drive we serve elevenses in the field which usually consists of Bertha’s Revenge Sloe Gin tipples and a tasty snack to girder the loins for the next drive.

Hearty Ballyvolane Lunches

After the the third drive, everyone heads back to the house for drinks and a 2-course lunch (main course, pudding and tea/coffee and wines) in the dining room. We prepare and serve up game that has been shot the week before and typically we would serve hearty pheasant curries/casseroles, game pies and stews with vegetables from the walled-garden all beautifully cooked by Ballyvolane House Chef Steve Mercer. Needless to say we are always happy to accommodate non-meat eaters and any special dietary requirements. Everyone has lunch together, the guns and their partners, the beaters and the pickers-up. After lunch, boots are put back on again and everyone moves off for the final two drives of the day. After the last drive of the day, guests make their way to the cosy bar in the barn for a pint or a cup of tea before heading home with a brace of birds.

We shoot every Thursday from November to mid-February and spaces are available for single guns or groups. All inclusive rates to include accommodation at Ballyvolane House, meals and shooting are available too. Hunting Licenses can be arranged for visiting overseas shooting guests and we can also store guns at Ballyvolane House.

We can also accommodate groups for clay pigeon shooting. This has proved to be a hugely popular activity with our wedding grooms and friends on the morning of the weddings and with corporate groups. We have guns, ear defenders and experienced shooting guides to give instruction and lessons too.
